The Sri Lanka Scrabble® League is a non profit organization, which has taken a keen interest in promoting the game of Scrabble in Sri Lanka. From small beginnings in 1989, the Sri Lanka Scrabble® League (SLSL), the official governing body for Scrabble® in Sri Lanka has been successful in bringing the game to a high standard and is a breeding ground for both Professional and Recreational Scrabble Players alike.
During its lifespan of almost three decades, the SLSL has nurtured its aspiring members to reach greater heights in the Scrabbling field. Some of our most noteworthy achievers in both the local and international arenas are Naween Fernando (3rd in the World Championships, 2005), Missaka Warusawithana, Harshan Lamabadusuriya and Suresh Chinnaiyah.
The game of Scrabble is very useful to everyone, regardless of age, strata or occupation as it enhances vocabulary skills and analytical skills and is an enjoyable word-game. Thus, we are a group of wide and varied individuals who have one thing in common; a love for words, strategic thinking and good fun. We all find that Scrabble keeps us on our toes, keeps the adrenaline pumping through our veins and our minds racing to anagram words.
The Scrabble playing population in the country is still growing; at SLSL our membership just exceeds 75. Nevertheless a bunch of us Scrabblers can be caught playing to our hearts’ content for a full five hours on Sundays from 1 – 6 pm at the Women’s International Club (WIC), No 16, Guildford Crescent, Colombo 7.
